Emergency help and useful resources

We are not an emergency service. If you or someone else is in danger now, these services can help straight away.

In danger now? Call 999

Call 999

If you cannot speak: the Silent Solution

  • Call 999 from a mobile and listen to the operator’s questions. If you can, cough or tap the handset.
  • If prompted, press 55. This lets the operator know you need the police and they will put you through.
  • Pressing 55 does not automatically send police to where you are, but the police will try to communicate with you through yes-or-no questions.
  • From a landline: if you stay silent and the operator hears only background noise, they may connect you to the police.

Staying safe online

Private browsing

A private (or “incognito”) window does not save the pages you visit in the device history. It does not hide your activity from the network or from monitoring software.

Clearing your history

You can delete specific pages from your browser history. Be aware that clearing everything may be noticed, and copies may remain on other devices if syncing is on.

Shared devices

If someone else uses your phone or computer or knows your passwords, consider using a trusted device, such as a friend’s or one at a public library.

Spyware

We cannot rule out spyware on your device. If you feel someone knows what you do online, use a different device and talk to a specialist helpline.

About Quick Exit

The Quick Exit button is on every page. Press it — or press the Esc key twice — to go straight to a weather website. The back button will not bring you back to this page.

Quick Exit cannot erase your browsing history, browser sync records or traces on a device someone else monitors.
